I am pleased to have gotten two papers accepted at the 29th FRUCT conference. In addition, I was chosen to be the session chair of the 1st International Workshop on the Models and Methods for Driver Monitoring.

The first paper is a preliminary literature review on distracted driver monitoring with smartphones. We plan to extend this literature review for a journal paper later.

I am very pleased to have co-authored two accepted papers at this year’s Americas’ Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2021).

I am pleased to announce that we are also successful with conference papers in 2020.

The VEHITS paper summarizes and describes the results, which have been developed together with the consortium partners JIG and RISE in the SCOTT project. In addition, the University of Rostock was involved with a study on the privacy of vehicle data. The paper shows how a data-driven service based on vehicle data can be built step by step and where privacy should be considered.

In the FRUCT paper we were invited to support Friedrich Lindow (University of Rostock) and Alexey Kashevnik (SPIIRAS and University of St. Petersburg, respectively). An existing smartphone app, which collects data while driving, is extended with an AI component to optimize the thresholds for events for each driver individually.

I am very pleased about our contribution in BITKOM’s latest position paper on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

BITKOM * is the industry association of the German information and telecommunications industry and thus one of the most renowned organizations in Europe when it comes to demonstrating application-oriented innovations.
Our contribution “Using Automotive Big Data to develop two new applications” in the position paper was even taken up by the German-language basic service AFP.

I am pleased that our analysis of actors and their relationships in the Data-driven Service Ecosystem was accepted as a Completed Research Paper at AMCIS 2019 conference.
Below are some impressions of the trip to Cancún (Mexico). Especially interesting was the Early Faculty Career Workshop with 10 renowned mentors from the IS science scene, such as Wynne Chin (University of Houston), Genevieve Bassellier (McGill University, Canada), Deborah Compeau (Washington State University), JJ Hsieh (Georgia State University), and Saonee Sarker (University of Virginia).

I was allowed to contribute to a publication for CAiSE 2019, which was successfully published. The paper shows how to display vehicle and Smart Watches data live in a Microsoft HoloLens. Specifically, the driver was shown his position on a map and his pulse in experiments. At the same time the HoloLens’ sensors were used to detect distractions, for example when the driver talks to the passenger or turns a knob on the radio.

With October 2019 I started as part-time lecturer at FH Upper Austria – Campus Hagenberg for the course “Automotive Services”. The course is a specialisation module in the 3rd semester of the bachelor study program “Automotive Computing” and consists of lecture and practice (5 ECTS).

My colleague Andreas Festl presented our scientific paper “The Vehicle Data Value Chain as a Lightweight Model to Describe Digital Vehicle Services” at the International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies (WEBIST) in Vienna. 

The paper was (which can be found here: http://insticc.org/node/TechnicalProgram/webist/presentationDetails/81132) on the short list of candidates to win the WEBIST 2019 best student paper award, but unfortunately did not win.

WEBIST aims to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in the technological advances and business applications of web-based information systems. The paper contains results from the EVOLVE project on the advancing digitization of the automotive industry. A lightweight model is presented to better understand this digital transformation and explain how digital vehicle services can be developed that use vehicle operating data and other data sources to deliver business value.

As in 2018, I was allowed to defend the project SCOTT in Brussels on 10.10.2019 as WP leader of the work package “Open Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement” together with the rest of the SCOTT project team.

Our Vehicle Data Hackathon was appreciated. In the last year we want to let many Open Innovation Contests (e.g. Hackathons) of project partners follow.


In a demo I was also allowed to introduce the app for the car driver, which shows him how his driving-style is. The solution consists of the data logger (developed by VIRTUAL VEHICLE), a cloud backend (developed by RISE) and the smartphone app developed by our partner JIG .
